Stranded ship cannot be rescued before Aug 15,

  • Ship owner given 48 hours time to evacuate the oil

KARACHI 26 July, 2021- Stranded ship cannot be rescued before Aug 15,s said Mr. Mahmood Moulvi, SPAM on Maritime Affairs here on Monday.

While briefing the media at Sea View where the ship has been stuck, the advisor to PM said that the Ship stuck due to rough sea, 2.5 knots speed, engine failure and breaking of two.

He said the ship was Singapore registered and the owner belonged to Iran. The ship had empty containers but had 100 to 150 tons of oil which might be dangerous for sea. We have given 48 hours time to the ship owner to evacuate the oil from the ship, he further said.

Addressing to media, the SPAM on Maritime Affairs said that the incident took place due to engine failure, rough sea and the inexperienced Captain of the Ship. The ship had come to exchange crew onboard and had already sailed out. The ship would be salvaged through operation not before 15th August if could rescue, he added.

The SPAM on Maritime Affairs was accompanied by Chairman KPT Nadir Warraich and Director General Port & Shipping Syed Syedain Raza Zaidi.

Ship might further collapse in sand

Tugboats could not be allowed to operate to remove the ship trapped on the sea shore, hence it is feared that it would further collapse in the sand. Shipping sources say tugboats have been waiting for permission and arrangements to be completed in Karachi since tomorrow morning.

KPT sources said the owner of the Hang Tan 77 ship requested an insurance claim, the amount of the claim will be determined after estimating the damage to the ship.

Sources say that the private company has started preparations for the claim estimate, the insurance claim could be millions of dollars.
