Meta’s new model can translate over 200 different languages around the world, including many languages that are not supported by existing translation systems.
According to the British newspaper Daily Mail, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has described this new artificial intelligence AI model as one of the fastest supercomputers in the world.
According to the report, the aim of using this new AI model ‘no language left behind’ is to enable more than 25 billion translations in different languages on a daily basis across all the company’s apps.
There are over 7,000 languages spoken in the world and many do not have enough data to train AI models.
The company is also looking to translate languages that have fewer resources, including Balinese, Egyptian Arabic, Pangasinan, Sardinian, Nigerian Fulfolde and Umbundu.
Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement that “the artificial intelligence modeling techniques we use are helping to produce high-quality translations for the languages spoken by billions of people around the world.”
Meta claims that the new model also has the ability to translate 55 African languages.
Marta R. Costa Josa, a META researcher, said of the AI model that “it could affect billions of people by allowing them to communicate in their native language.”
