Amendments allow EVMs, voting rights for overseas citizens

Amid fervent protest by the opposition, the government on Wednesday managed to pass the Election Act Amendment Bill in joint sitting of Parliament.

Overseas Pakistanis were also given the right to vote via the Internet and a bill to use electronic voting machines.

The united opposition boycotted the proceedings of the house after various bills were passed during the protests and chanting of slogans.Opposition leader Shahbaz Sharif will go to his chambers in protest.

Earlier, the bill on the use of EVMs was deferred at the request of Adviser to the Prime Minister on Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan, but it was later taken up again and put up to a vote.
