Accused of breaking Ranjit Singh's statue granted bail

LAHORE Aug 20,2021- A local court on Friday, has granted bail to an accused of smashing a statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, at the Shahi Fort in Lahore.

The accused Rizwan was produced in a local court in Lahore where the Tibi City Police requested, the accused to be sent to jail on a 14-day judicial remand which was rejected by the court.

The lawyers of the accused Rizwan filed a bail application on the ground that the crime was bailable and said that the police had completed the investigation against the accused Rizwan and no further recovery was expected from the accused.

The counsel for the accused further said that the provisions against Rizwan were bailable and on this the court ordered to release the accused on bail of Rs. 50,000.

It is to be noted that on August 17, the statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the founder of the Sikh Empire, which was installed in the Shahi fort of Lahore, was damaged by the accused Rizwan with a hammer.

The arm of the statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh was also broken in Lahore in December 2020 by the accused Zeeshan.

His statue was unveiled in the Lahore Fort at the Mai Jindan Haveli, on the emperor’s 180th death anniversary, by Sikh historian, writer and filmmaker Bobby Singh Bansal.

Bansal’s London-based organisation the S.K. Foundation had funded the statue. It was sculpted by local artists, under the aegis of the Fakir Khana Museum.
