Is Imran's endless fight with establishment the main source of power of Shehbaz govt

Imran Khan’s ongoing fight with the establishment serves as a significant source of strength for Shahbaz Sharif’s administration. The incarcerated founder and chairman of PTI, during his trial in the NAB corruption reference, expressed his belief that Shehbaz Sharif’s government would not endure beyond four or five months.

He anticipated the government’s downfall, which he believed would lead to his release from Adiala Jail.

While Imran Khan is focused on the PPP’s potential role in this scenario, he seems to overlook how the current tensions with the establishment and PTI’s criticisms of the military are actually benefiting Shahbaz Sharif’s government, providing it with a sense of stability.

Although the People’s Party is not formally part of the federal cabinet, reports suggest that it has pledged its full support to the Shehbaz government in exchange for key constitutional positions, such as the president, Senate chairman, National Assembly deputy chairman, and two governors.

There are speculations that following some controversial decisions and the privatization of PIA by the Shehbaz Sharif government, the People’s Party might join the federal cabinet. However, there is no concrete agreement between the two parties regarding government formation at present.

Historically, the consolidation of civilian rule in Pakistan has relied heavily on the dynamics between the government and the establishment.

Previous governments, despite having a significant majority, failed to complete their terms due to strained relations with the establishment.

In contrast, the previous PDM government under Shehbaz Sharif, which included 13 coalition parties, successfully completed its tenure with the full backing of the establishment. While Asif Ali Zardari’s presence in the President’s House is seen as a guarantee for Shehbaz Sharif’s government by many, the top military leadership has also expressed its unwavering support for the new administration.
