Fed Govt restores HEC budget to Rs 65 billion

Islamabad, June 4, 2024 – The federal government has restored the recurring budget of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to 65 billion rupees for the financial year 2024-25. This decision reverses a previous cut that had reduced the budget to 25 billion rupees.

Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, Chairman of the Federal Higher Education Commission, confirmed the restoration in an interview with ‘Jang’. He stated that the federal government has reconsidered and reversed its earlier decision, ensuring that the HEC can continue to fund universities across the provinces as per usual.

The Ministry of Finance has communicated this budget restoration in a formal letter to the Chairman of the Higher Education Commission. Additionally, the Planning Commission has reinstated the HEC’s development budget to 59 billion rupees, which had been previously slashed to 21 billion rupees.

This financial restoration is expected to significantly bolster the operations and development projects of higher education institutions across Pakistan, reinforcing the government’s commitment to education.
