Will Chaudhry Nisar take oath of as MPA Punjab?

LAHORE (May 16, 2021): Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan is expected to take oath as MPA Punjab Assembly after three years.

Political and media circles said his secretary has reportedly contacted the Punjab Assembly Secretariat for the oath and is expected to be sworn in on May 18, when the assembly resumes its proceedings.

However former PML-N government’s home minister denied the reports that he was taking oath of Punjab Assembly.

There are reports that the government is expected to pass an ordinance, under which the Election Commission of Pakistan will denotify those lawmakers who will not take oath within 60 days after declaration of results.

Reports said, former PML-N leader Nisar has decided to re-establish contact with the PML-N after adopting a narrative of politics of reconciliation, sources said. The sources said, Chaudhry Nisar’s contacts with PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif might work.

Following differences with PML-N, Chaudhry Nisar contested the 2018 general election as an independent candidate on two National Assembly and two provincial assembly seats.

He won only the PP-10 (Rawalpindi) seat but did not take oath on it.

In 2019, a petition was filed in the Lahore High Court against his failure to take oath. The petitioner asked the court to direct the Election Commission to de-notify Nisar.

PTI’s Momina Waheed had also tabled the resolution against Nisar’s decision to defer his oath-taking.
