Independent Urdu launches Indy Urdu In-Campus Initiative across Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Oct 20,2022- Independent Urdu is pleased to announce the launch of a new initiative, the Indy Urdu In-Campus Initiative, which aims to bridge the gap between the theory and practice of media by taking knowledge of the new media market and its requirements straight to the students at university campuses across Pakistan.

Independent Urdu, the Urdu service of the Independent UK, has a team of highly qualified journalists who will, as part of the In-Campus Initiative, share knowledge of their field and lessons from the newsroom with university students in their study halls.

Independent Urdu has launched this initiative with students of NUST, QAU and SZABIST University in Islamabad during the months of September and OCtober 2002. The last session was on Thursday, October 19 at NUST University where Independent Urdu’s Editor in Chief, Baker Atyani, talked to students about reporting civil unrest and protests. The same topic was discussed with the student at QAU on October 09, 20022.

On September 29, 2022, Managing Editor Haroon Rashid talked to SZABIST students about fake news and how to combat misinformation and promote fact-based, balanced journalism in Pakistan.

“The session discussed with the audience what fake news and false information is, debunking viral social media content, and investigating how and why it spreads,” Haroon Rashid said.

A team from the Independent Urdu newsroom also participated in the session.

On the occasion, Atyani said though only in the Pakistani market for four years, Independent Urdu had become an “example” of what a digital news platform should look like.

“We believe we have introduced new terms for Urdu digital news platforms in Pakistan, a model that is modern, dynamic, yet news oriented and independent,” Atyani said. “We aim to share this experience with major universities in Pakistan.”

The Indy In-Campus initiative will be executed in partnership and collaboration with major universities across Pakistan.
