Islamabad, 28 Nov, 2023: In a surprising turn of events, Imran Khan, the Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has tendered his resignation from the post. The decision was confirmed by PTI Vice President Sher Afzal Marwat, who also disclosed that Imran Khan would not be partaking in the upcoming intra-party elections, citing legal restrictions.
The PTI Chairman’s decision to step down precedes the intra-party election, and Sher Afzal Marwat clarified that Imran Khan will be re-elected as the party chairman following a possible disqualification from the court.
Barrister Gauhar Khan is likely to be nominated as the Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the intra-party election.
When contacted by Geo News, Barrister Gauhar Khan has not confirmed or denied becoming the new PTI chairman.
Sources close to the matter have revealed that Imran Khan conveyed this decision to the core committee of the party from his current location in jail. Another member of the PTI is expected to be elected as the chairman during the intra-party elections, with Imran Khan himself set to determine the nominee.
The upcoming intra-party elections will witness the selection of a new chairman due to legal repercussions in the Toshah Khana case. Imran Khan is anticipated to play a pivotal role in the nomination process for the new chairman.
Party sources indicate that the elections will not be limited to the chairman’s position but will also encompass the selection of a vice chairman and various organizational posts within the PTI.
Once the period of the imposed punishment concludes, it is anticipated that Imran Khan will rejoin the intra-party elections as the Chairman, resuming his leadership role.
Insiders suggest that Chairman PTI will continue to wield influence over crucial decisions, including those related to new party members and ticket allocations, despite his temporary withdrawal from the active party leadership. The political landscape is likely to witness significant developments as the PTI charts its course through these changes.
