Federal Cabinet sets ups committee to probe May 9 incidents

Islamabad, Jan 7,2024: The federal government has established a cabinet committee tasked with investigating the May 9, incidents. The committee is set to deliver its comprehensive report within 14 days.

  1. Scope of Inquiry: Committee to Identify Masterminds, Planners, Facilitators, and Participants
    • The newly formed committee, approved by the federal cabinet, will have the mandate to identify and ascertain the roles and responsibilities of masterminds, planners, facilitators, and individuals involved in the events of May 9, which unfolded as a disaster.The cabinet division has issued an official notification outlining the constitution of the committee along with the Terms of Reference (TORs). The convener of the committee will be the Minister of Law and Justice, with members including the Minister of Interior, Minister of Information and Broadcasting, and Minister of Human Rights. The committee has the flexibility to include additional members if deemed necessary.
  2. Key TORs of the Committee: Five-Point Agenda for Thorough Investigation
    • The committee’s Terms of Reference (TORs) encompass a five-point agenda, focusing on examining the events leading to the May 9 incidents, identifying masterminds, planners, facilitators, and implementers, determining their roles, investigating the causes of the incidents, establishing responsibility, and analyzing both immediate and long-term effects.
  3. Committee Leadership: Minister of Law and Justice to Convene the Inquiry
    • The Minister of Law and Justice will assume the role of the committee’s convener, leading the inquiry into the May 9 incidents. Other key members, including the Minister of Interior, Minister of Information and Broadcasting, and Minister of Human Rights, will contribute to the comprehensive examination.
    • The May 9 riots or were a series of violent incidents that took place on 9 May 2023, in Pakistan. Following the arrest of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party’s head,  demonstrations held by PTI’s supporters descended into violent riots.
