Cyclone likely to cause thunderstorms, rains in Sindh

KARACHI: A cyclone threat is developing in the Arabian Sea will cause raindust/ thunderstorms and gusty winds in Sindh, says the Meteorological Department on Saturday

The Depression over Southeast Arabian has intensified into a Cyclonic Storm “TAUKTAE” and lay centered at a distance of about 1,460km south-southeast of Karachi,” said the Met Department’s alert.

The weather department has recorded maximum speed of the winds around the cyclone at 70-90km/hr, adding that they are expected to reach 100kh/hr.

“The system is likely to intensify further into a Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS) during next 12-18 hours,” read the alert, adding that it can move in the north-northwest direction and reach the Indian city of Gujarat by the morning of May 18.

According to present conditions, widespread raindust/thunderstorm with few heavy to very heavy falls and gusty winds of 70-90 Kmph are likely to occur in Thatta, Badin, Thar, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot & Sanghar districts from 17 May to 20 May 2021,” read the alert.

According to the weather department, Karachi, Hyderabad, Jamshoro, Shaheed Benazirabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Shikarpur, Jacobabad and Dadu are expected to receive raindust/thunderstorm with few heavy falls and gusty winds of 40-60 km/h from May 18-20.

“Sea conditions will be rough to very rough,” read the alert.

Sindh CM holds meeting

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah held a meeting to face any emergency causing due to cyclone. Director Met department briefed the meeting about the cyclone situation.

He told the meeting that a Weather System is forming south of the Arabian Sea, which has taken shape of cyclne, which is named Tauktae.

This cyclone has 3 types of effects: there may be thunderstorms or thunderstorms, can be high intensity winds.

“If the wind speed is 27-22 knots, there will be a dust storm, If the wind speed is 33-28 knots, the trees will not be harmed’ Met office representative said.

“If the wind speed is 47-34 knots, roofs and crops will be damaged, now to see what makes the cyclone speed.”

If Cyclone crosses Gujarat (India), that will have an impact on Thatta, Badin, Mirpurkhas, Umar Kot and Sanghar districts he added.

He further said Thatta, Badin Mirpurkhas, Umar Kot, Tharparkar and Sanghar will have good rainfall. Thatta and other districts may receive pH 100-80 km / h.

It will make its impact in the district from May 17 to May 2021;

If Cyclone crosses the western area of ​​Karachi, there will be rains on May 18-20 in Karachi, Hub, Lasbela, Hyderabad and Jamshoro districts. Strong winds will follow. Met alert said

Sindh CM directed the Administrator Karachi to remove billboards from city and also directed to form emergency plan, which should be prepared with consultation of Matt, PDMA.

In case cyclone hits Gujarat, there will be heavy rains in Thar area. DC Thar has been instructed to take necessary steps;

Chief Minister Sindh instructed Commissioners Karachi, KMC and DMC to start clearing the checkpoints of drains in view of the possibility of rainfall.

CM Sindh asked the Chief Secretary to set up control room, such control room be also set up in concerned district.

Chief Minister Sindh directed all cantonments in Karachi to make arrangements in their areas;

DG PDMA Salman Shah said that depression cyclone situation has taken place in the sea, and the situation will become more clear in the next two days.
