PPP and Jamaat-e-Islami reach agreement, sit-in ended

– Powers including health education restored to the city governments

KARACHI, Jan 28,2022- Talks between PPP and Jamaat-e-Islami last night were successful, after which Jamaat-e-Islami announced to end the sit-in.

The Sindh government agreed to restore the powers, including health education and local government powers, to the city governments.

A written agreement has been reached between the Sindh government and Jamaat-e-Islami, according to which the Sindh government has agreed to return all educational institutions and hospitals to Karachi Municipality.

The Karachi Municipality will also get a share of the octroi and motor vehicle tax. The Mayor will be the Chairman of Karachi Solid Waste Management and Water Board. The Sindh government was ready to provide financial resources to make Karachi Municipality independent. Hub Canal and water projects will be completed soon. Provincial Finance Commission will be set up and KMDC were also returned to Karachi.

The PPP delegation reached the site of Jamaat-e-Islami’s sit-in last night and after the talks, Jamaat-e-Islami ended the sit-in after 28 days.  

Sindh government delegation led by Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah held talks with senior Jamaat-e-Islami negotiator Muslim Pervez.

Speaking at the end of the sit-in, Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah said that there was consensus on many issues in our talks and the government would take steps to amend the Act 2013.

The Sindh government will do this in a week. The health related institutions which were taken over will be handed over to the local bodies again. The provincial government will provide monthly and annual funds to UC on the basis of population.

The mayor will be the chairman of Karachi Water Board and Sewerage Board.

This will be done in one to two weeks. Health and education related institutions will be handed over to local bodies, Solid Waste Management Board will be subordinate to Mayor Karachi, motor vehicle tax money will be paid according to the share.

The provincial finance commission will be given after taking over the powers of the local bodies representatives. The provincial government will amend the local body law.

 It was decided with Nasir Hussain Shah that a negotiating committee would be formed. A draft will be prepared today.
