PML-N’s Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz group has made a clear change in its strategy. According to this strategy, everyone else is silent, but the current ISI chief, General Faiz, is being openly targeted by Maryam Nawaz.
Under this strategy, no other Establishment member is being named but Maryam Nawaz is targeting one man and he is being held responsible for everything Nawaz Sharif’s disqualification by the Supreme Court, his removal from the PM’s slot, the Panama case and the consequent convictions of Mian Sahib and Maryam by the judiciary. The punishments are being meted out and then the alleged political engineering before the election. She is naming the person repeatedly. And a new narrative is being constructed he is the man who is responsible for bringing Imran Khan in power and is the root of all evil.
First, through a petition in the Islamabad High Court, General Faiz was named all her allegations were made part of the court record and then on the second or third day, while talking to the media, she repeated the allegations made in hes petition. More open chats that aired on almost all TV channels. Not only this, on last night (Saturday) at the PDM public meeting in Faisalabad, Maryam Nawaz once again targeted DG ISI.
Criticizing Imran Khan’s policies, not acknowledging him as an elected Prime Minister, Maryam Nawaz repeatedly reiterated that the responsibility for all this lies with one and the same person, citing only General Faiz, who belongs to the Army and the Establishment. In the same public meeting, slogans of General Faiz’s resignation were also chanted from the stage and then today this demand was included in the top Twitter trends by the social media of PML-N.
Earlier, Mian Sahib and Maryam blamed both the Army Chief and the DG ISI for all the evils, the abuses that befell them, for bringing Imran Khan to power and for defeating the PML-N, but as a result a strong reaction against Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz in general was felt and it was said that Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz targeted the army! Both, the father and daughter had a very negative impression in the defense establishment.
Although many PML-N leaders, including Shahaz Sharif, did not agree with this policy of Nawaz Sharif and Maryam, sources said that Nawaz Sharif also felt that the policy of targeting two very important officers of the military leadership by naming them, may do more harm than good to the party. Perhaps that is why a new narrative is now being made targeting only General Faiz, who could be Imran Khan’s new army chief next year.
The clear purpose of this new narrative is to make General Faiz so controversial and to speak out against him repeatedly in public so that he has no chance of becoming the next army chief.
The PML-N is aware that the allegations leveled against General Faiz date back to the time when he was not the head of ISI but second in command. That is, if he did all that he is accused of doing wrong, did he do it on his own or on someone else’s orders?
In November next year, the current army chief will complete three years of his extension. It would be premature to say anything definitive about what happens until then, because here everything changes in days. The newly formed PML-N narrative was reinforced by the controversy over Prime Minister Imran Khan’s blocking of notification of recent changes in the army. What was left was filled by the government’s own representatives appearing on TV channels saying that Imran Khan was not ready to send General Faiz anywhere else from the ISI.
The opposition, especially the PML-N and Maryam Nawaz, also raised the issue, criticizing Imran Khan for politicizing the military establishment and linking the non-removal of General Faiz to politics. The reason why the government kept General Faiz in the same institution for a few months more was given in the context of the situation in Afghanistan. It has come to light and I also have information that General Faiz himself does not want to stay in the ISI anymore and wants to take over the Peshawar Corps as soon as possible as per the ISPR notification.
I have been told that the Prime Minister, who has created an unnecessary controversy by blocking the notification and creating a tense situation between himself and the Army, will issue the notification next Wednesday, two days later. When I look at the situation in Pakistan and think about the bad economy and the high level of inflation, there is a lot of anxiety and fear about the future of Pakistan.
These circumstances demand that all should it together and take decisions beyond their own personal interests to get Pakistan out of these difficulties and for a better future. For this, the role of Prime Minister Imran Khan may be important, but he is not coming out of the madness of thieves, robbers, dacoits and NROs. And the situation is getting worse.
